Develon Raises Site Safety to New Levels

Site safety depends on good people, clear procedures and the right technology. Develon is now bringing all three closer together with a new generation of intelligent safety systems for its Series 9 smart crawler excavators.

Available as an option, the package combines the Smart All-Around Viewing Monitor (SAVM), collision-risk warnings, a Virtual Wall function and Develon’s new E-Stop system. Together, they are designed to give operators a clearer view of the machine’s surroundings and intervene when a person enters a defined safety zone.

360-degree awareness around the machine

Busy construction, demolition and quarrying sites can leave operators managing restricted visibility, moving equipment and people working nearby. The SAVM and E-Stop platform uses six cameras and three radar sensors to monitor the excavator’s surroundings in real time.

With a detection range of up to 13 metres and seven selectable viewing modes, operators can check the front, rear, left and right sides of the machine from the in-cab display. When a person is detected, the system provides immediate visual and audible warnings.

Warnings at six metres, automatic stopping at four

The work area is divided into two clearly defined zones:

  • Yellow warning zone – from 6 metres: the operator receives an early alert and machine speed is reduced.
  • Red danger zone – from 4 metres: the system can automatically stop swing and reverse movements.

Crucially, the system is designed to recognise people rather than general objects, helping to avoid unnecessary interruptions while focusing on the greatest risk on site.

“E-Stop technology is comparable to emergency braking systems used in the automotive industry, and has already attracted strong attention from operators seeking practical solutions to improve site safety standards.”

Stephane Dieu, Product Manager for Develon Excavators in Europe

Virtual boundaries for higher-risk areas

Develon’s Virtual Wall feature adds another layer of control by allowing operators to define working boundaries around the excavator. This can help prevent movement into higher-risk areas or potential collision zones, supporting safer operation around structures, equipment and people.

Technology does not replace a well-managed site, trained operators or established safety procedures. It can, however, provide an important extra layer of awareness and intervention when visibility is limited or conditions change quickly.

A practical step towards safer sites

For Pioneer Plant customers, these developments show how the latest Develon machines are combining performance with practical technology that supports operators throughout the working day. The long-term aim is straightforward: help prevent serious incidents before they happen.
